What are the Astrological Planet’s and what do they mean?
In astrology, the term “planet” does not always refer to the actual planets in our solar system. This term often encompasses the Sun and Moon as well, in addition to asteroids and other bodies in the sky. In this article we will talk about how these factors guide your sign in Astrology based on your planets.
You can think of an astrological planet as being any physical body that is found on your chart.
You will also see the Sun and Moon referred to as “luminaries” or “lights” instead of planets. Other aspects of the chart that you won’t necessarily see referred to as planets include the asteroids, the nodes, and the angles.
Regardless of which planet you are talking about, the signs are always going to be the same twelve: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
Every planet appears to move along the same path through our sky, making a journey through all the signs of the zodiac.
One interesting thing about the planets (including the luminaries) is that they have zodiac signs over which they “rule”. You can think of these planets as having unique influences on the signs.
Sometimes traits associated with that planet will also be ones found in the sign. These planets often feel “at home” in the signs they rule and these are considered to be harmonious placements for the planets.
People may even derive strength from the planet that rules their Sun sign or the dominant sign in their chart.
If Mars is in a “favorable” area of the sky, for example, Aries and Scorpio may feel the benefits of that, even if Mars is not in their sign.
The planets (that is to say, the actual planets of our solar system) are divided up into personal planets, interpersonal planets, and transpersonal planets.
How they are divided up is determined by the actual distance of each planet from the earth and, therefore, from you as a person.
More about these Planets
Personal Planets: The personal planets are Mercury, Venus, and Mars. You will also see the two luminaries, the Sun and Moon, referred to as personal planets.
They are considered to be closest to our physical and emotional selves. These planets also revolve more quickly around the Sun, meaning that people who are the same age, even people born on the same day, are going to have these planets in a wide variety of signs and combinations.
These planets say a lot about your personality. Who you are as a person, your self-identity, self-worth, and self-esteem are all governed by these planets.
How you feel and express emotions, as well as your values, what you find aesthetically pleasing, and even your feelings about sex are also things the personal planets deal with.
Interpersonal Planets: The interpersonal or social planets are Jupiter and Saturn. They are considered outer planets, due to their slower orbits, but they are not as “mysterious” as the transpersonal planets since we can see them with the naked eye.
These deal with how we relate to other people and how we are out in the world. For example, Jupiter has a lot to do with philosophy, our luck in the world, and social expression.
Saturn deals with our responsibilities and can relate to our careers and the work we do.
Transpersonal Planets: The transpersonal or generational planets are Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
People who are all around the same age will share the same sign, meaning that they have less of a tie to who we are as individual people and more of a tie to the traits of those cohorts or generations.
You will often see astrologers talk about the Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto “Generations”. They often look at these groups as a whole, as well as the time periods they were born in, in order to see what sorts of social themes pop up.
Outside of the planets in our solar system, astrologers also use other bodies and points in space in astrological chart readings.
Asteroids: One thing astrologers use is asteroids. There are thousands and thousands of asteroids in our solar system and it would be impractical to look at every single one of these on a chart.
However, there are common ones that astrologers often use. These are often the largest asteroids. Examples of these would be Ceres, Pallas Athena, Vesta, and Juno.
These particular asteroids are known as the “goddess asteroids”, as they are all named for Roman goddesses.
Centaurs: Similar to asteroids, another type of planetary body astrologers look at is something known as a “centaur”. This is like a hybrid between a comet and an asteroid. The most popular one is Chiron.
Mathematical Points: Mathematical points in space are another aspect astrologers look at. These are, obviously, not actually physical bodies like planets and asteroids.
These mathematical points can be difficult for astrologers and non-astrologers alike to understand. They are not actual planets or stars that we can see in the sky.
Most people do not even know how to calculate these points themselves. Instead, they rely on online chart creators to tell them what sign the points are in at any given time.
If you are finding it hard to wrap your head around the idea of these points, don’t worry! Even experienced astrologers don’t always understand them either.
Nodes are one example of these points. These are points where the paths of the Moon and planets cross over the path the Sun takes through our sky.
The sign the two points intersect is what sign the node is “in”. The most commonly looked at nodes are lunar nodes.
Angles: The angles are another example of intangible points used in astrology. These have to do with where the Sun is in the sky at given times. The Ascendant (AC) is where the Sun rises.
The Midheaven or Medium Coeli (MC) is where the Sun is at midday. The Descendant (DC) is sunset. The Imum Coeli (IC) is where the Sun is at midnight.
As you can see, there are a lot of different things you’ll find in your chart! If it seems overwhelming, don’t worry.
Here is a look at the meaning behind some of the planets you’ll find in your astrological chart.
Keywords associated with the Sun are:
- Will and willpower
Anyone who knows anything about astrology most likely knows their Sun sign. This is the sign people mean when they say they “are” a Gemini, Taurus, Capricorn, etc.
Sun signs are the ones used in horoscopes found in pop culture magazines, newspapers, and websites.
The Sun sign is the most popular for a reason. Your Sun sign is your “ego”. Just like the Sun is the center of our solar system, your Sun sign is at the core of who you are as a person.
The Sun spends about one month in each sign, taking a year to go through the entire zodiac. This year-long period does not line up with our solar year.
It begins on March 21st when Aries begins and ends on March 20th of the following year when Pisces ends.
The Sun gives life to our entire solar system. Going along with this, your Sun sign is your life energy. It is your self. Your base personality is going to be that of your Sun sign.
The traits of your Sun sign are going to stay with you throughout life. In times of joy and sorrow, you are going to embody these traits one way or another.
This is not just how people view you or who you try to project yourself as. This is who you are. At the end of the day, this is your truest self.
You can also say that your Sun sign is your identity. This is probably why so many people say they simply “are” their Sun sign! The Sun takes up most of our solar system.
It is a huge part of who you are as a person, even if it is not the entirety of who you are.
How you recharge can also be found with the Sun. You can also use your Sun sign to figure out the areas you feel most powerful in.
Taurus may recharge and feel on top of the world out in nature, while Leo thrives in being in the spotlight.
The Sun can also be our creativity and individuality. What sparks us in life and gets us going can be found in our Sun sign. The Sun is not the only aspect in charge of this, of course.
However, it does say a lot about our own particular “spark”. Where Venus might tell us what we find beautiful and Mars might tell us about our passions, the Sun is going to show us how we express those things.
Traditionally, the Sun is also related to the father or father-figure in a person’s life. The Sun is also said to embody “masculine” energy.
Not all astrologers use this aspect of the Sun but it is interesting to think about it!
Having many planets close to the Sun can often allow people to better express their inner selves (depending on the planets). People with Mercury in the same sign as the Sun will have no trouble talking about themselves.
People with Venus close to the Sun have strong ties between their core personality, their values, and their aesthetic. On the other hand, people with Saturn close to the Sun may feel this energy “constricts” who they are.
The Sun is the traditional ruler of Leo. The colors associated with the Sun are gold and yellow.
Keywords associated with the Moon are:
- The past
If the Sun is your ego, the Moon is your heart. The Moon is in charge of your emotional self, who you are underneath. Depending on your Moon sign, this can be the parts of you that people don’t see or the parts that people see all too often.
The moon takes a month to go through each sign of the zodiac, staying in each sign for only 2-3 days.
It can even change signs during the day, making people born only hours apart have totally different Moon signs.
The Moon also shows what makes you feel secure in life. It may be where you take refuge when emotions are running high and you need to calm down.
Your Sun sign is often influenced by your Moon sign. A watery Moon sign can tone down a fiery Sun sign.
Having the same sign or even signs of the same element as your Sun and Moon sign amplifies those traits. Water Sun and Moon are more emotional. Fire Sun and Moon are more heated.
Earth Sun and Moon are extremely grounded. Air Sun and Moon are off in the clouds.
To understand how exactly the Moon affects us, take a look at how it works in each sign.

Keywords associated with Mercury are:
If you know your Sun sign, you can easily take a guess at what sign Mercury is in. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun so this planet is always going to be either in the same sign as the Sun or one sign before or after.
Therefore, if the Sun is in Sagittarius on your chart, Mercury can only be in Sagittarius, Scorpio, or Capricorn.
Mercury can stay in one sign anywhere from 15 days to two months. The time period in which Mercury stays in a sign varies widely due it frequently going retrograde.
“Retrograde” simply means that the planet appears to be moving backward in the sky, due to how we see the planet revolving around the Sun from our viewpoint on earth.
Mercury goes retrograde three times per year for about three weeks.
Mercury is named for a Roman god who is both a trickster and a messenger. This shows off the nature of Mercury perfectly!
Where Mercury is at will determine how you communicate. Mercury is also in charge of thoughts and thinking. Mercury wants to spread information and the sign it is in will show you how it does this.
How we make decisions is also governed by Mercury.
The trickster part comes out when Mercury goes retrograde. Again, this is when it appears to be moving backward in the sky.
During this time, people often avoid making big decisions or signing contracts. There can be huge communication breakdowns and problems with technology.
Miscommunications happen often and it is definitely not a fun time!

Keywords associated with Uranus are:
Uranus is the first of the transpersonal planets. It was not discovered until 1781 so you will not see anything about it in classical astrology.
In fact, many modern astrologers hesitate to even give Uranus or the other transpersonal planets governance over any of the signs due to how relatively young our knowledge about them is compared to the other planets.
Uranus takes 84 years to go through the entire zodiac, staying in each sign for about seven years.
Uranus is all about revolution and how we express our individuality and freedom. It is considered to be a “weird” planet that brings eccentricity to whatever area of life it is governing in the chart.
This is one of the planets we talk about in terms of “generations”. Seven years is a long enough time for this planet to have an effect on the world as a whole, not just on individual people.
Astrologers look at how Uranus was changing the climate of the time period it was in, as well as how it affects the cohort of people who have it in the same sign.
This planet really shakes things up! It can bring huge amounts of change to whatever area the sign it is in governs. The energy it brings can be chaotic but it can also be extremely liberating.
People born during the seven years it stays in one sign often continue to bring about the changes Uranus started while they were being born.
Uranus does not traditionally rule over any signs, as it was not discovered until modern times. Some modern astrologers say that it rules over Aquarius.

Keywords associated with Neptune are:
Neptune was discovered in 1846 and is another planet that is not part of classical astrology.
Neptune takes 164 years to go through all the signs, spending about 14 years in each one. This is one of two planets where you won’t be around to experience its return! Unless people start living beyond 164 years, that is. Dreamy Neptune might be all about that.
This is another generational planet where we can look at the group as a whole to get an idea of what Neptune in each sign means. People may not be personally affected by Neptune in their charts, unless they have a personal planet in the same sign or another strong aspect to Neptune.
Neptune can show us where the delusions of our generation are. It can also help us to transcend these delusions.
This is another planet that is here to teach us and our generations a lesson. There is something that we get so caught up in dreaming about, we don’t act or actually make those dreams a reality.
Maybe we dream of fame so much that we think it will just come about, without any work required on our part.
Neptune can hide things and get them lost in the ether. Part of working with Neptune is learning to dissolve the clouds around it and find the action to make your dreams a reality.
It is a very mysterious planet. Modern astrologers don’t have examples of people to see how this planet works in all signs. We often have to look back on periods in the past to get a better idea of how Neptune functions.
Like Uranus, Neptune is not a traditional ruler over any signs. Some modern astrologers say that it rules over Pisces.
Neptune in Aries: There is nobody alive today who has this Neptune placement and there won’t be for a few more years! Neptune in Aries can have delusions around what they find exciting. These people need to learn to not get too lost in their imagination.
Neptune in Taurus: This is another Neptune placement without living examples to look at. There may be problems with money and fantasizing too much about material things.
Neptune in Gemini: Communication is where Neptune in Gemini can get caught up. They may idealize and dream about education so much that they never actually get around to achieving the knowledge they seek.
Neptune in Cancer: There are a few people with this placement alive today but only those few who lived to be beyond 100. They can get highly emotional about their values regarding home and family.
They may cling to traditions or familial relationships that no longer serve them.
Neptune in Leo: Other people can get lost in the allure of Neptune in Leo. This placement is all about seeming impressive and needs to learn to not lose themselves in their delusions of grandeur.
Neptune in Virgo: The idealism of this generation surrounds health and service. They may get so caught up in the small details and in their own beliefs about this that they miss the big picture.
Neptune in Libra: This generation can get so caught up in seeking harmony that they become stagnate and indecisive. Freedom and justice can be achieved but they need to get out of their own heads and act on their beliefs.
Neptune in Scorpio: These people can have deep, dark dreams. Sometimes literally. One way they can become disillusioned and lose sight of themselves is through cults or similar practices. They need to learn not to believe in things just because they fit that occult aesthetic.
Neptune in Sagittarius: These people can get caught up in their own minds, overvaluing higher thinking. They can also be too tolerant of other ideas and miss that there are negative views in this world.
Neptune in Capricorn: This generation dreams of power and wealth but has no idea how to actually make it happen. They need to learn to stop dreaming and start doing.
Neptune in Aquarius: This generation can end up rebelling for rebellion’s sake. They need to learn to harness their powers of independence and freedom to focus on certain causes, not just on causing a ruckus.
Neptune in Pisces: This is a particularly dreamy generation because of Pisces. They can become self-sacrificing or even have problems with drugs on their quest for spirituality and inspiration.
Keywords associated with Pluto are:
Pluto was the last of the planets to be discovered, only being found in 1930. Even though it has since been “demoted” to a dwarf planet, it is still one of the main planets that modern astrologers use.
Pluto stays in one sign for 248 years, staying in each one for 10-20 years. Again, you will never experience a Pluto Return in your lifetime.
However, some people believe that Pluto Returns after death are important to look at. Long dead celebrities may experience a resurgence of relevance in pop culture during their Pluto return.
Things that were previously unknown about them might come to light.
Pluto is all about power. This is often social power as opposed to personal power, since it is a generational planet. It deals with both destruction and creation. Life, death, and rebirth are themes of this planet as well.
Pluto is named for the Roman god of the underworld (also known as Hades in Greek mythology).
As such, it deals with hidden things and things “below the ground”. It has a strong tie to occult and metaphysical forces.
People who have personal planets in the same sign as Pluto will feel its power strongly. For example, you might have the Sun and Venus in Scorpio along with your Pluto in Scorpio.
This is going to make for a highly intuitive, even psychic person. They have strong ties to themes of the underworld and may be obsessed with death and everything related to it.
Only six of the twelve signs really have people with Pluto in them in their charts living today. These are Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius.
You can take a stab at what sign your Pluto is in based on how old you are. The oldest living people probably have Cancer while the youngest have Sagittarius.
Pluto also does not traditionally rule over any signs. Modern astrologers have designated it the ruler of Scorpio.
Honestly, we do not know much about Pluto in the signs that don’t have living people with those placements. Pluto was only discovered in 1930, and we are still figuring out this mysterious planet.
Here is some information about the signs we do know about:
Pluto in Cancer: This is the Silent Generation. It is also known as the Traditionalist Generation. Their power comes through sticking with tradition, and they have a hard time letting that die.
Pluto in Leo: These are the Baby Boomers. They find their power through competition and also optimism. They have a hard time with people they believe to be negative or pessimistic.
Pluto in Virgo: This is mostly Gen X though some Baby Boomers also fit into this because of some crazy retrograde motion going on with Pluto at the time. These people are skeptics for sure.
They can also be hypercritical and find their power by questioning everything.
Pluto in Libra: The wild retrograde motion continues with Pluto in Libra. Gen X and Millennials may both have this placement. These people want to break down barriers that create inequality.
Because this is Libra, the Gen Xers and Millennials often disagree about how to go about this.
Pluto in Scorpio: These are most of the rest of the Millennials. Occult topics saw a rise during this generation, naturally with both Pluto and Scorpio loving all things occult and metaphysical.
This generation has a “darker” flavor. They want to kill the negative views other generations have about sex and taboo topics and rebuild a world where those things are commonly accepted.
Pluto in Sagittarius: Very late Millennials and Gen Z make up this generation. This is a generation that wants freedom for everyone. Traditional ideas about religion, sexuality, and gender are dying with this generation, and they are rebuilding them.
Many of us will not be around to discover how Pluto works in other signs. Honestly, this fits with the theme of Pluto. It is never going to reveal all of its secrets to every one of us.
Lunar & Planetary Nodes
The lunar and planetary nodes are a lesser-known aspect of the chart, even to some practicing astrologers.
The nodes are not physical bodies. The lunar nodes are the points in which the Moon crosses the ecliptic (the apparent path of the Sun across the sky over the year). Planetary nodes are the same.
They are the points in which the planets cross the ecliptic. Lunar nodes are far more popular in astrology than planetary nodes are, but some astrologers do use the planetary nodes.
Nodes come in sets – the North Nodes and the South Nodes. This means that there are only so many combinations of nodes you can have.
The North Node will always be in the sign opposite the sign of the South Node and vice versa. For example, if your Lunar North Node is in Capricorn, the South Node is going to be in Cancer.
The Lunar Nodes
An interesting thing about the Lunar Nodes is that they are also the points at which we see eclipses. Remember that a Lunar Node is where the path of the Moon crosses the path of the Sun.
When the Nodes occur during a Full Moon, we get a Lunar Eclipse. When the Nodes occur during a New Moon, we get a Solar Eclipse.
You can use this knowledge to tell if you were born during an eclipse. If your Sun sign is on a Node, you can reasonably assume that an eclipse was taking place while you were born.
The South Node is said to be the qualities you possess innately. These may be qualities you fall back on too often and need to move away from in order to achieve your full potential.
The North Node is what you are “moving toward”. These are the qualities you need to work on. This will show you the person you truly need to be.
The Node combinations are also referred to as an Axis. The same themes are going to come up with, for example, people with their North Node in Taurus and their South Node in Scorpio.
This is also the case with people who have the opposite configuration.
Aries/Libra Axis: The theme of this axis is “Individuality vs. Relationships”. These people need to learn to balance the two themes, with South Node
Aries needing to move toward learning the value of relationships and South Node Libra needing to learn how to be their own person.
Taurus/Scorpio Axis: The theme of this axis is “Materials vs. Spirituality”. Taurus South Node needs to learn to be a little less practical and focused on the material world. Scorpio South Node needs to become a little more down to earth.
Gemini/Taurus Axis: The theme of this axis is “Local vs. Global”. Gemini South Node is comfortable with learning lots of things and sharing them with those they are close to.
They need to learn to expand their minds. Sagittarius South Node needs to learn how to stay in one place and how to appreciate that not all knowledge needs to be deep and philosophical.
Cancer/Capricorn Axis: This is the “Personal vs. Professional” axis. The Cancer South Node is comfortable in the home and with caring for others and needs to learn to have some more ambition out in the world.
Capricorn South Node needs to learn how to be more compassionate and place others ahead of their career sometimes.
Leo/Aquarius Axis: This is the “Ego vs. Group” axis. Leo South Nodes need to learn how to cool their ego down and do things that benefit the community as a whole.
Aquarius South Nodes need to learn how to not lose their individuality in the crowd.
Virgo/Pisces Axis: This is the “Left Brain vs. Right Brain” axis. Virgo South Nodes need to learn that being logical all the time doesn’t truly serve them. Pisces South Nodes need to learn how to get out of the fantasy world every now and then.
These nodes function in similar ways to the Lunar Nodes, just with the different planets. These are where the paths of the planets intersect with the path of the Sun.
These are the pros and cons of our lives as related to the themes of the planet. Communication for Mercury, romance for Venus, passion for Mars, fortune for Jupiter, revolution for Uranus, dreams for Neptune, and death/rebirth for Pluto.
You can look at the Planetary Nodes to find out where your natural strengths are and what you need to work toward in your life in regards to the topics of the individual planets.
Some keywords associated with Ceres are:
- Unconditional love
- Letting go
- Death and renewal
Ceres is one of the “goddess asteroids”. Ceres is the Roman goddess of Earth and grain. Her story is related to the one of Demeter and Persephone. In the story, Demeter loses her beloved daughter Persephone to the underworld. She eventually is reunited with her, but only for half the year, before Persephone once again returns to the underworld.
In the Winter, when Persephone is in the underworld, Demeter does not nurture the Earth. Nothing grows. When Persephone returns in the Spring, Demeter again fills the Earth with plants and life.
This is actually an aspect of the chart we are still learning about. More research is needed, though we do know a bit about what Ceres can tell us about ourselves.
Ceres in the chart is all about the theme of this story. It is about how we deal with loss and letting go. It is about the cycles of death and renewal. Ceres also speaks to unconditional love, such as that of a parent for a child.

Some keywords associated with Chiron are:
- Wounded healer
You may see Chiron referred to as both an asteroid and a comet. It is actually an object known as a “centaur”. These bodies orbit the Sun between Jupiter and Saturn and display traits of both asteroids and comets.
Chiron was the first of these objects discovered. It was found in 1977, so it is a very recent discovery and addition to astrology.
Chiron spends 7-9 years in each sign, taking about 50 years to go through the entire zodiac.
Where Chiron is in your astrological chart shows you where you are most vulnerable. This is your “wound”. It may be a part of yourself that you are sensitive about, that you try to hide from or ignore.
This may also be an area of your life where you have unreasonable expectations for yourself.
With Chiron, the point is to learn from this wound and rise above it. You don’t need to erase the wound, rather you need to embrace it.
Using the knowledge you have gained from it can help you to become a better person and even to become a mentor to help others with their wounds.
Chiron in Zodiac Signs
Chiron in Aries: It is hard for these people to see their own self-worth and importance. They can see it in others easily and want to remind them of it. Through helping others realize their own strengths, this person can finally see what their own are.
Chiron in Taurus: The wound here is a sense of guilt over enjoying things. It can be hard for this person to treat themselves without feeling like they shouldn’t be doing it.

Chiron in Gemini: These people value communication but may not always feel comfortable talking and may even ramble on and on and then feel guilty about it.

There are actually three Liliths in astrology. How confusing!
The first Lilith is the asteroid Lilith. This is a physical body.
The second Lilith is Black Moon Lilith. This is the most commonly talked about, and you will see many modern astrologers using this. This is not a physical object. It is a point of alignment.
Black Moon Lilith is found in the Moon’s “apogee”, the point where its orbit is farthest from the Earth. Because of the Moon’s orbit, it has two centers. The Earth is one and Black Moon Lilith is the other.
The third Lilith is Dark Moon Lilith. This is a “ghost Moon”. This is not a confirmed planetary body. It is a theoretical “second Moon” that some historical astronomers and astrologers claimed existed.
Supposedly, it resembles a dust cloud in the shape of a sphere.
We are going to discuss Black Moon Lilith. Most likely, if an astrologer just says “Lilith”, they are talking about this one. If they are talking about one of the other two, they typically will clarify.
Keywords associated with Black Moon Lilith are:
- Priestess and prostitute
- Forbidden fruit
- Psychic healing
- Altered states
Black Moon Lilith stays about nine months in each of the signs.
The name Lilith comes from a mythological figure. There are a few different myths surrounding Lilith (of course there are!), but the most common one says she was the first wife of the Biblical figure Adam, the first man.
She was created at the same time as he was and considered herself to be equal to him. She refused to lie under him during sex. When he argued against this, she left the Garden of Eden.
After this, it is said she became a demon – a succubus. She is a figure who tempts men and derives her strength from their arousal.
She is also known in some myths as the first vampire, a demon that feasts off the blood of women and their babies.
Lilith is definitely a figure related to all things taboo. Her stories have lust and seduction as key themes.
Nowadays, Lilith is considered by some to be a feminist icon. She stood up against inequality and refused to bow down to a man.
Black Moon Lilith is supposed to show the hidden parts of yourself, especially related to your sexual desires. This is your dark side. The parts of you that you may not want to think about or let show.
Lilith can show us where we are repressed. It is our base sexuality, the raw impulses we feel deep inside. It also shows where we are vulnerable.
Knowing what sign Black Moon Lilith is in can tell you a lot about your “shadow” self. Secret sexual fantasies may also appear once you come to understand this aspect of your personality.
